But I understood that if the Gestate is verifiably pregnant at the end of the six month confinement, he and the Impregnate responsible for the pregnancy were released from the Center?
Of course I have questions: If the Gestate is pregnant upon release, where will he be allowed to live? Are there certified centers with staff who enforce the diet and exercise regimen, doctors to perform checkups, and birthing centers?
I'm assuming any live infants will be removed to the care of the Centers, since the focus is on getting the Gestates pregnant and carrying to term. Child rearing would be a stressor I doubt they'd allow. And if a Gestate's reproductive life is 10, 15, 20 years, with a live birth every second year, that's a lot of kids for a Gestate to raise. Children being such a precious commodity, I'd think the state wouldn't trust them to the Gestates who bore them.
Although Impregnates and Gestates are mated for as long as they can reproduce, Jack told Jared he would only have to see his Gestate every couple of years to impregnate him again, and could more or less live a normal life in between. Are Gestates allowed to have a "normal" life for a year between pregnancies? Where are they allowed to live? Are they required to maintain the diet and exercise even through that year? Who supervises them, if so?
If Impregnate and Gestate have a true mating and live together some of those questions would be answered, but I'd suppose that Impregnates would be tempted to have marriages and relationships outside their "service," and would be able to blend with the general population, if so allowed.
Gestates, of course, would not. And even if they were allowed "off the leash" for the year between pregnancies, they would always be identifiable, and more vulnerable to sexual predators than other men.
I can't stop thinking about the loss of personal agency and freedom this story is portraying, for both Impregnate and Gestate, though it's far more restrictive and harsh on the Gestate. For every thing they take away, I want to fight for every little bit of autonomy and identity.

--Oh dear. I'm overthinking this, aren't I?
