I went back to see what you've really told us about Sam (not hearsay).
It's the first conversation with Jared that tells me Sam is bad news. Either it shows who Sam is or he was winding Jared up on purpose. So, maybe he isn't evil, but it still seems like he's playing unpleasant games for his as yet unknown reasons.
