Sam climbed up onto the flatbed as soon as the vehicle was moving slow enough for him to get up there without risking a limb. He needed to check that nothing on the truck had been damaged en route, after all, there was no point delivering it only to have to find some way of disposing of it later.
The inspection wasn’t a criticism of Chris’ driving – much. Because Sam knew that Chris was a demon behind the wheel, reckless and foolhardy, he’d known him long enough to know that. In fact he’d been in an accident the day Sarah first introduced them, a bad one if the cast on his leg had been anything to go by.
He recovered the goods. Almost everything Jeff had put on his list as ‘essential’ was here. Maybe a little scratched and dented, but nothing that would stop it from working. Some of the more specialized pieces had been more difficult to source and were, unfortunately, missing. They could possibly be acquired later … but there were no guarantees. Getting this kind of medical equipment together could raise alarm bells in some quarters and things were risky enough as it was.
After this morning he was tempted to tell Jeff to give up on the clinic – they’d set one up somewhere else – somewhere more secure.
But was anywhere safe?
Travelling probably wouldn’t be a good idea right now either – not with the additional police and military traffic he’d seen on the local roads.
He didn’t know what to do for the best and the unfamiliar sense of uncertainty was driving him crazy. He kept second guessing himself and doubting every decision.
He needed to get his head straight.
He’d been too distracted for his own good in the weeks since Sarah’s death. Too distracted for anyone else’s, too.
Things had happened and he’d not … he’d not fucking noticed!
He jumped down and thumped the roof of the truck’s cab. “Get your ass out here, you lazy bastard.”
Chris stuck his head out the window, all cocky grin and attitude. “What for? Aren’t you going to be joining me in my nice warm truck? It’s fucking freezing out there.”
Sam smiled, “Pussy.”
Chris, like the child he could be at times, stuck his tongue out. “Don’t know why you couldn’t have hidden out in Florida – or somewhere south, at least.” He almost shouted the last few words and Sam felt his mood lighten, briefly. “I’m surprised you’re still here. Thought they expected you back before the Ackles’ gang arrived?”
Sam rubbed the palm of his hand across his forehead, pain arching through his skull. The headache he’d woken up with had been steadily growing more intense. “They did, but I heard from Tony and …”
Chris’ smile disappeared. “So now you know for sure?”
Sam nodded. It was one thing to think someone was responsible for the death of your wife, it was another to know it for a fact.
Chris didn’t need him to say anything, the expression on his face must have telegraphed the information accurately enough.
“Son of a bitch.” Chris held a knife up to the window. Sam was struck by how fast he’d managed to lay his hands on it, but then it was the serrated hunting knife he’d gotten himself last Christmas - his favorite - and it was destined to never far from his reach. “So, we going to do a little partying with Jackie boy?”
The way Chris seemed to light up at the idea was almost enough for Sam to agree. She’d been Chris’ friend first and Sam had to make himself remember that it wasn’t just him who’d lost her.
He was conflicted.
Killing Jack, slowly, painfully, was all he could think of, all he’d been able to think of for the last three hours since Tony’s call.
Chris would cheer him on.
But there was more at stake than vengeance.
“Jack’s been in touch with them again.”
Chris frowned. “How the fuck’s he managed that?”
Sam shrugged. “No idea. There’s no cell coverage out here, but he could have a radio or satellite phone stashed – we’ll have to look for it.”
“How the hell would he get his hands on that kind of tech?” Chris turned away momentarily, placed his knife on the dash. “So what’s he been offering?”
Sam grimaced, “What do you think? Pregnant gestates are great bargaining chips, it seems everybody wants one. The only thing that stops me from skinning him now is the fact he’s not revealed where they are – he wants some assurances first.”
Chris looked at him frowning and Sam knew what he was thinking. The increased traffic in the area could be a coincidence, but it was dangerous, stupid, to think that way.
“Who’s he dealing with?”
“The bugs Sarah planted were all on Metcalfe’s lines. It looks like the good doctor needs to redeem himself with the directors. The Center reopens next week and the weasley little bastard needs to reinforce his position. Jack’s an idiot if he trusts him, but it looks like he’s willing to deal.”
“Fuck.”
“Exactly.”
Chris nodded, a smile reclaiming his face. Sam marveled at how he could do that so readily. Everyone wore masks, but even Chris’ masks wore disguises and he seemed able to add additional layers effortlessly. He was a scary fucker and, not for the first time, Sam was glad they were on the same side. “So, come on. We going to get Jack and have a little chat with him?”
Sam smirked, allowing himself to get caught up in the other man’s enthusiasm. Chatting he could do. Chatting with more than a little violence thrown in for good measure. Hell, even Sarah had been known to get physical once in a while.
“Okay, we go back to camp. Stay the night. Offer Jack a little trip. If he chooses not to come with us we take him anyway. I don’t want to worry anyone else.”
“You mean Jensen.”
Chris raised his eyebrows innocently and Sam huffed. The man wouldn’t accept that he wasn’t interested in Jensen romantically or physically – he just liked him. Jensen was… a friend. Nothing more. “I mean anyone.”
“Yeah, right.”
Sam looked at the remains of his temporary camp. No-one would be able to tell that he’d stayed here. Not that anyone would be out checking.
As the truck pulled away Sam held on tight.
“Can I speak to my brother?”
Jared looked up from his place next to Jensen and saw Joshua looking down at him. He hadn’t even heard him approach, too lost in the serenity of the moment. Ten minutes without harassment or interruption… Jared should have known it was too good to last.
“Sure you can.” Jared was just about to stand, go back into the cabin, when he felt Jensen’s hand on his arm. “Whatever you want to say, Josh, Jared can be around to hear it.”
Joshua seemed to have an internal debate about exactly how much he wanted to say with Jared around, but he relented, relaxed, and dragged the vacant chair closer to the bench where Jared and Jensen sat.
He frowned. “Should you be out here?”
Jensen sighed, “I needed some air. And don’t you start. I’ve already had the lecture from mom.”
Joshua chuckled. “It’s okay. If you’ve already had her two cents then I won’t say anything. Probably won’t do me any good anyway.”
“So what is it you wanted to chat to me about?” Jared heard the coldness, the barely contained anger in Jensen’s words. Jensen’s mood teetered on a knife edge, whichever way he fell Jared doubted it would be pretty.
Joshua looked sheepishly at the floor before glancing up. His eyes went briefly to Jared before his attention settled on Jensen. “Your relationship. The two of you.”
Jared held his breath, braced himself for Jensen’s reaction.
For a moment it looked like Jensen had stopped breathing too, but then an exhaled billow left Jensen’s mouth, cooled rapidly in the frigid air and disappeared.
“What about it?”
Cold, cold, too cold. Jared could tell Jensen was restraining himself. He just hoped Joshua could.
He wondered how it would be taken if he made a strategic exit. Joshua’s ire, if there was any, he could handle, but Jensen’s hormonal mood swings were starting to rival Trey’s in their intensity. Jared hoped it was just because he was still feeling a little shitty and that it would improve when he felt better. But the pressure he was being put under from certain quarters was definitely exacerbating the matter.
Joshua smiled. It was a smile, almost non-existent, fragile, but still there. “I just want you to know I’m not going to give you a hard time. I’m not going to say I understand it, but ... well. I’m not Joe. Or mom.”
Jared waited to see what Jensen would say, what he would do. It could go either way: tears or tantrums.
Or maybe nothing at all.
The last couple of days had been tense – no, that was an understatement. The last couple of days had been an emotional nightmare.
Jensen loved having his family around – and he hated it. And he felt guilty for every negative thought that passed through his head when it was directed towards them - well, towards his mother.
Donna had been doing a pretty good job of avoiding Jared when she could, and ignoring him when she couldn’t, and Jensen was getting more than a little pissed at her cold shoulder.
Her contempt was obvious.
She fawned over Jensen to the point where he’d left his bed and come outside just to get away from her – and she’d already been outside three times to check on him in the last half hour.
Ignoring Jared’s presence, of course.
So with that, and the fact that she’d obviously been recruited to Jeff’s cause and kept mentioning the examination, Jensen’s fuse had almost expired.
Jared just kept bracing himself for the impending explosion.
He felt the tension leave Jensen’s body even though only their shoulders met. “Thanks.”
Josh’s smile grew. “It’s okay. You got me and dad on side. The other two will come around – eventually. Though I still reckon we keep it from Joe for as long as possible.”
Jared was shocked when Jensen grabbed his hand, pulled it to his lap and held on to it tightly. He waited to see what Joshua’s reaction would be – so did Jensen.
Joshua didn’t comment, he looked down and then back up. Didn’t flinch, and passed his little brother’s test with flying colors.
Jensen swallowed before he spoke. He wasn’t going to back down, there was a steely determination in every word that came out of his mouth. “I don’t want to sleep without Jared anymore. He’s moving back in with me tonight. If Joe finds out, he finds out. If mom doesn’t like it, tough. I’m not ashamed of Jared, and I’m not hiding anything.”
Jared blinked. Stared at Jensen, stared at Joshua. Neither man said anything.
Moving back in with Jensen was news to him. No, he hadn’t been particularly happy about the move in to Jensen’s old room, but while Jensen was sick and exhausted it had meant Jensen could get some decent sleep without being disturbed. It wasn’t something he wanted to make a permanent change – and, yes, Jensen had been pissed when he’d suggested it – but it had gone some way in preventing the storm he could see brewing in Donna Ackles’ eyes.
Jared took a deep breath.
Joshua smiled, Jensen returned it, and Jared prepared for bad weather.

There's no way his mum's going to life them sleeping together, what if she heard them having sex, cause I bet Jensen will insist on it, lol. But I think it's Josh I'm more worried about, how he's going to react to the whole thing, what if he decides to try and take things into his own hands and tries to threaten or forcefully remove Jared.
